Steps to Keep Your Computer Running Smoothly
- Never de-activate your virus scanning software. The
icon should be visible in the system tray at all times. You should check
to make sure the virus definition files are current at least once a week –
right click on the system tray icon-->select “Virus scan”--> click on “about”
- if the dat file date is more than 1 week old, open the program and update.
- Never open e-mail attachments.
- If you are surfing the web and a window pops up
asking you to install ANYTHING, read the entire explanation of what you are
installing. If you don’t know what it is or what it will do, DO NOT click
“yes” or “continue” Close the window using the “x” in the upper right corner,
or some other way that will NOT allow the program to execute.
- Get into a habit of maintaining your computer on a
regular schedule. For example: Every Sunday morning open Internet Explorer -
click “Tools”-->”Internet Options” -->click on “Delete Cookies”-->click on
“Delete Files” and check the box “Delete all offline content” then run
Ad-Aware then Spybot and then do a full scan with Mcafee. Once a month you
should defrag your C:\ drive also.
- Each user on a Windows XP system using the NTFS file
format is responsible to perform these actions on his/her own volume. The same
security that prevents anyone from looking at your files prevents most
programs from scanning the secure volume.
- Heat is a major enemy of computer circuitry. Dust can
form a blanket of insulation that increases the possibility of heat stress and
the early failure of your computer components. You should make it a point to
blow out the inside of your computer with clean compressed air every 3 to 6
months. Also make sure there is 2 to 4 inches of free air space around your
computer so in can get rid of the heat it normally generates.
- Updating your Windows Operating System software with
security patches is good to do about once a month. Once you have connected to
the internet - Click on “Start”--> “Widows Update” located in the upper left
menu. Then click on the blue text “Scan For Updates”. You should probably only
install the “Critical Updates”, unless you want the ability to type in Chinese
or the other 40 languages available from the Windows Update Site. Once again,
only install the “critical Updates” unless you know what you are installing
and feel you need the patch or program.
Even if you follow all of the above directions
consistently you still may encounter some kind of new nastiness that the
computer evildoers dream up daily. If you ever suspect you have been infected or
your computer just starts acting peculiar, the first thing to do is physically
disconnect from your internet connection –unplug your phone wire or network
cable - then run Ad-Aware then Spybot and then do a full scan with McAfee.
Chances are one of the three programs will find your problem and at least alert
you. If all three programs have been updated recently and still come up empty,
you may have a hardware problem. Consider calling the Commander – CMDR Tech Ltd.
